Why it is worth to fight for Inhouse Teams

The neverending idea to outsource everything

… until nothing is left

Inhouse Software Competence is an asset - and yet we outsource almost anything if the deal is right.

In the past 10 years I have focused on building up in-house software competence for my former employer. To be precise, we hired the first iOS developer in Singapore back in 2014, we in-sourced a portfolio of over 50 Mio. EUR from external suppliers in 2018 and recently, I was responsible for a total of 4000 in-house developers, delivering everything from SAP to Software in the Car.

I am a big advocate to consciously in-source software development - for the right reasons & the right topics.

WHY?

  1. Instant Value Creation: Changing demands, needs or simply an idea: Without going through a procurement process, managing Cross Charges and running after Budgets, my In-House Teams were able to validate ideas and deliver something of true value to the customer immediately.

  2. Competitive Edge: Software is part of the business model - for those processes that are differentiating you from your competitors you need to be able to run it by yourself. If you convert from Brick & Mortar to an Online Sales, shouldn’t you be able to run your sales channel independently ?

  3. Money-matters: My In-House Teams were able to give our suppliers a really hard time. In one of my projects I was able to bring down external costs to a 1/3 of the initial price (!). Many traditional IT-organizations can’t challenge their suppliers on a functional & technical basis.

In the upcoming Newsletters I will talk about the ups & downs of in-sourcing & outsourcing. My personal experiences of almost 10 years of trying to encourage corporate IT people to get ‘All (their) hands (back) on Tech’.

Till then,

Sophie
