How to get twice as fast

...or faster

One of the most controversial topics we have been dealing with in our past careers was the measurement of output of developers. In this case, we specifically talk about inhouse developers - the idea that suppliers/ partners might not work in the most efficient way has never been challenged. Nevermind, that might be something I have to reflect on in my corporate detox program ;)

It lies in the nature of any organization to challenge the output of your workforce: Whilst being responsible for almost 4000 in-house developers, the temptation to put an ‘efficiency’ KPI out there was extremely high, and yes, within the different software units there were indeed KPIs around Productivity (Number of Hours/Billed Hours) and so forth.

Despite being able to measure how ‘productive’ the organization was, we often lacked ideas how to make things faster . Ideas were usually:

  • Adding more manpower

  • Creating more Pressure

  • Re-Organizing things

Never in my career have those things created significant impact to the overall idea to become indeed Twice as Fast.

Matthias’ post on speed nailed it for me:

FOCUS

This means Limiting Work in Progress and focusing your attention and the attention of your work force on one single thing. And if you are honest to yourself - how often do you fight for streamlining your organization and focusing your people on the single most important topic ?
